I think about this a lot. A lot of devs (and players, for that matter) in recent years get hung up on some analysis they saw in a video essay. The point of studying art you love is building your own intuition. Trust your gut. Get weird. Alienate players. That’s how art works.

I want to make a mystery dungeon style roguelike game and friendslop about cave diving and a fighting game and a word game and a puzzle adventure game plus I want to remake my top down shooter about casting spells and I want to make a first person dungeon crawler RPG and I want to make a platformer

Started playing Sims 4 on a whim. Have not played The Sims since Livin’ Large. Somehow I thought this would be more relaxing than Death Stranding.

I could write endlessly about what each of these games means to me. Maybe it’s rose-colored glasses, but being a part of the TIGSource forums at that time was magical.

Sometimes I worry I put way too much much thought into what is undoubtably an extremely niche game, but then I remember putting way too much thought into anything is basically my exact definition of fun.

So, I get a lot of questions about generating procedural environments, but I was never great with the whole "show your work" thing in school, so let's try something: if you got questions, ask them here and I'll try to answer them* because learning is fun. *Answers not guaranteed to be interesting.

Really wishing GB Studio had a better way to watch for lag than just eyeballing it. Even just a frame rate display would be nice.

Thinking I'll put more emphasis on stage hazards compared to classic Balloon Fight. The gameboy can't handle as many enemies at once, so this feels like a good way to keep things interesting and twist up the formula a bit. #gbstudio #gameboy

Return of the infinimall. While I didn't completely rewrite it this time, I did gut and rebuild the base structural generation. Can't help myself. Way more flexible and, of course, way more math headaches for me. #screenshotsaturday

Made this on a sick day and now I'm debating how far I actually want to take a rock-paper-scissors RPG. The opponent employs a (non-random!) strategy, so I've already taken it further than the concept deserves.

Has GB Studio been a gateway drug to Assembly for anyone else? Just me?

How accurate is GB emulation these days? Do I need to be diligently testing on hardware, or is it pretty one-for-one?

I will never stop making games with psx-style visuals. It will be 2047 and I'll be like "hey guys here's my new game inspired by Metal Gear Solid and Resident Evil. It has hand-painted textures, dithering, and wobbly polygons." Then you'll be able to download a demo for it to your brain

Light progress for #screenshotsaturday. Got scoring and a time limit in, but mostly some backend work on the pickup/drop-off system, managing locations, messages, etc. without being able to just pull from a database. Gotten real familiar with GBVM, though.

Basic gameplay loop: check.

Something I’m enjoying about GB dev: sometimes when I ask myself, “how am I gonna do that,” the answer is “oh, you can’t,” and I get to blissfully move on.

procedural generation is so much fun. i love how it just seems to come alive based on the parameters you (carefully, painstakingly...) build, how you plan it... it always surprises me. hard not to take constant screenshots of how it evolves :)

one wonderful thing about the new game making philosophy i'm seeing emerge is that people aren't trying for a commercial edge, they're just doing things they're excited about. we're all doing weird specific and complimentary experiments in parallel. we're all collaborating and enriching one another.

i am making an open world roguelike. i have been imagining this world for years, and i want to make this game so people can go there and live many lives in it! the game features whole-cloth, accessible design, deep mysteries, and a meticulous generated living world.
