i'm going to take a first stab at the refactor. i know basically how this is going to work, but i don't yet know how compositing will work.

what size of heat shrink is appropriate for splicing the little wires inside USB cable? 1 mm? i am reading that signal is 28 awg and the power wires are 20-28 awg.

an interesting tension in the commercial side of games is that the industry is both very insistent on the hardware + new release treadmill: everything must be disposable, everything new must be better; and at the same time they are /incredibly/ conservative about ever doing anything new.

I'm thinking about mechanics / presentation / overall flow for this small sculpture garden game or games. i'm trying to be pretty gentle and sensitive to consequences. one thing i quite like is the idea of visiting spaces with different perspectives or contexts, such as changing tools or state.

so now that i solved the collision response question, the next few things i want to do are generative. i am very interested in a sense of intent. a lot of this boils down to sensitive relationships between things. having eg an island with a building on it have, somewhere, a bridge which leads to it.

i haven't done the refactor yet, but i opimized some and added interlacing and it's running just fine for the work i'm doing right now.

i'm working on bridges at various heights. these ground level bridges might get some contextual rules to knit them in well- i'm very interested in paths too, which could include these.

this is what it feels like with the number of slope constraint solver steps set really high. you get these very faceted, geometric feeling slopes in some places. it's nice in terms of amount of emergence, though there's also an argument for the feel with steps at ~4.

i think i like the hard slope limit for canal edges? you get these nice fairly natural shapes without making the canals feel too soft. and there are some nice things which happen emergently with the large composite flats, like this variant tunnel.

one of the lingering things i've been wanting to do is finesse the way the canals interact with high ground. right now i'm trying a slope constraint.

this is what it's like with the cloud rays jittered. i don't know if i'll go with this, but it's a really interesting technique.

i put up a shelf for goblins. mei says maybe i put it up too high but i figure it's better for the jump to be tricky at first and get easier over time, than to be easy at first and get boring over time.

if you turn, and catch it before the interlacing has stabilized, the clouds are nubbly and organic. i realize you could do this in a temporally coherent way by fudging ray angles...

LOD work. the red bands are *2 sample spacing. the teeth are kind of a lot, but maybe they're nice stylistically.

the eventual more optimized version of this will probably work quite differently, but i'm trying to wrangle the current renderer so i can get ok LOD out of it.

i am excited to say that basic collision detection + response are now working for this type of geometry.

i'm working toward slope + ledge support. if not blocked, you can walk on the detected highest floor level now, and you drop if unsupported. next i'll be adding the additional layers to this, so you can walk on geometry like this roof.

quake keyboard controls with auto slope look is really clunky compared to mouselook, but it's a very interesting feel.

i am currently trying to 100% solve the collision problem for this tech, with slope + ledge climbing (but /not/ ground plane vector correction for walls, which is more complex).

project plans, gently: i've decided to turn this raycaster experiment into a set of small games. i think they'll essentially be sculpture gardens, with the substance in how the spaces are connected and what walking (and flying) through them evokes.

bloodborne update: i have been in forbidden woods this evening. it's a wonderful area! i just beat the boss on the third try or so.

i'm experimentally adding blockers to the wall generation (light green in this test map), which lets me create restful areas without walls and regulate density.

here is the map, cycling through a number of different runs of the generator. canals are blue, grey is patches of terrain that are too rough for canals or buildings, and the terra cotta color is buildings / walls / bridges.

i was hesitant to add this because i want to mostly think in terms of how things feel locally, but i added a map for testing. it's already given me a good lead on a bug, and helped with generation. i'm currently testing seeding walls with loops, and making canals start as a continuous path.
