Odd framing of a people’s identity by The Guardian! I think you’ll find they’re “Iranian Jews”… you know, like American Jews or British Jews or Iranian Muslims or British Muslims or… 😮💨 you get the point

'Sunset,' (1893) probably shows a view over the Lake Pielinen near Koli in eastern Finland. The leading artistic personalities of Eero Järnefelt's generation, from Jean Sibelius to Akseli Gallen-Kallela, regarded Karelia as a lost paradise.

‘After the Hurricane’ 1988 Storm Amy reminded me of the painting I began a few weeks after the devastation caused in October1987, featuring King Edward Memorial Park, Shadwell. Unusually I have included myself in this picture!

‘The Shadow’ 2015. Arles towards end of Summer. In a quiet alley to escape the noise found in all tourist places these days and felt at home here where I could weave a story around the man ahead and the woman pulling aside a curtain to peer out.

‘Front Step’ 1975. Pencil drawing of parents made shortly before house requisitioned for ‘slum clearance’ to make way for concrete blocks of council flats. 50 years later these too look ready for the knackers’ yard

'Singer Building at Night.' (c1910) Charles Vezin worked at a dry-goods firm for the first part of his career then began painting, dedicating himself to art for the remainder of his life. He's known for his Impressionistic scenes of the New York skyline, such as this work.

Piet Mondriaan began his artistic training like most artists - attempting to capture the natural world in its most accurate and precise form. Trained in the classical technique, he graduated from Amsterdam's Royal Academy of Visual Arts in 1897, the year this work was painted.

‘Regent’s Canal, Stepney’ 2002-17. By the time I was satisfied with this painting, the corrugated fences had been replaced and the tow path was teeming with joggers and cyclists. Railway bridge still rules ok though!

‘Theatre Royal, Stratford’ 2024. A few years the facade was repainted in tasteful, muted coffee and mocha colours but I prefer the building as it was- brash and glittery. This painting is in memory of those times

Robert Buhler's portrait is of his friend and fellow artist John Minton. Painted in 1949 it is a fine, sincere piece of work and perfectly captures Minton's melancholy side.

‘Turner’s Road, E3’ 1988. All that remains is the chimney and, nearby, a sign declaring ‘George Davis is innocent’, probably by the same hand. A man wearing an old greasy mac squatted in the building above the graffiti. He constantly tinkered with a decrepit old van parked on waste land opposite.

'Two Lemons.' (1970) Eliot Hodgkin painted this still-life in tempera, a medium which enabled him to 'achieve the effects I am aiming at… I try to show things exactly as they are, yet with some of their mystery and poetry, and as though seen for the first time.’
