William Nicholson lived at Harlech in North Wales towards the end of the First World War. This view looks across Tremadoc Bay to the mountains on the Lleyn Peninsula; Nicholson painted the view by moonlight after rain.

'Breakfast.' (1940) Léon de Smet painted interiors, still lifes, things on tables, and in cupboards. He painted his family, and when they refused to pose for his work, he made pictures of their absence.

Like his friend Paul Nash who he met at the Slade, Claughton Pellew believed trees held a spiritual quality. This work from 1924 likely features his wife Emma (also an artist) walking near their home at Southrepps, North Norfolk.

'Bursting Shell.' (1918) One of the most powerful of Christopher Nevinson's WW1 paintings. The detonated shell carries earth and shrapnel upwards and outwards; the centre of the blast with its shooting flames simulates the disorientating sensory experience of an explosion.

William Rothenstein painted 'The Old Gardener,' during the 1930s while at Far Oakridge, his home in Gloucestershire. In his memoirs he described the idyll which existed in the Cotswolds between the wars and made a commitment to painting local people as a record of social history

In 1930, Richard Carline sailed to Venezuela with his brother Sydney and the artist, John Duguid, in one of the last of the great square-rigged ships, the Grace Harwar. This work was first sketched and then painted from the ship's foremast in the Mid-Atlantic.

‘Regent’s Canal, Stepney’ 2002-17. By the time I was satisfied with this painting, the corrugated fences had been replaced and the tow path was teeming with joggers and cyclists. Railway bridge still rules ok though!
