The reason I love this Reductress joke is that it gets to the essence of what "The Doomscroll" actually is. It's not simply a parade of disinterestedly reported news stories with sober headlines about tragedies. It's everyone else's *commentary* about them.

A news story about something that is genuinely horrifying then gets spun up by a hundred people into something a thousand times worse, into a prophecy of doom, into a reason to commit suicide, into a reason to give up on life/your country/democracy/taking care of yourself.

This alone would pretty much destroy AI slop. It wouldn't kill AI entirely, nor should it, but it would basically be the end of models being able to suck in terabytes of stolen content to train themselves.

The AI legislation we really need is a law that: 1. Requires all online content platforms create systems that let creators give or deny consent for AI models to scrape them. 2. Gives any creator who consents for their work to be scraped a right to charge a licensing fee.
