I just don't get "writers" who defend the use of AI, and in fact get preemptively belligerent against criticism for them using it. It just goes against every instinct and goal I have as a person who loves words, stories, books, and writing.

Check out our latest episode on the surprising story of Box Brown. He was famous for mailing himself to freedom in a box, but his second act as political performance artists and magician is even wilder!

By "He is Risen," I didn't think it meant Google would message me saying my Gmail had been inactive nearly eight months, to learn it was a Gmail account I set up in 2005 & never used, which had 20 years of somebody's Call of Duty and Indonesian Instagram spam.

Recently, someone left a short, good review on my old novelette, Ella. Many interesting stories have a split of 1-star & 5-stars. I like to think that's the case with Ella -- which is available for free on ITCH:

Sat down at 12 PM to start reviewing my edits on a 128K book. Just now sending it back at 3 AM. Book came with a style sheet from a publisher, which first inspired and then entirely dissipated all sense of imposter syndrome. ~550K words copy edited in March. Time for a couple days off.

Occurred to me today: I always thought it was called a "wormhole" because it was comparing it to a hole in the ground a worm made. But now I'm like ... wait, it's because the hole is shaped like a worm, isn't it?

As a freelance editor, I'm fairly confident I can spot when a client has used AI for editing purposes. The writing, if I'm being diplomatic, tends to be competent but ... samey. Like one line is fine. But two pages of the same tone and vibe of that competent line...

Today I realized that my local "writers' guild," of which I am a paying member, doesn't exactly have their finger on the pulse of the writing community. All the reactions to their April Fool's post were a mixture of various levels of trauma.

It's not easy being an indie author. Book sales are rarely consistent and never guaranteed. Some months you do very well, and some months, only a few or even no one at all checks out your books. 1/2

Confession: Sometimes it's easier to write a whole ass book then to come up with a title for it. If I don't have The Right Titleโข the by the time I start writing I will usually never find it and so the book just ends up called something that is just almost right but not quite there.

As a freelance
#editor
, I've always operated on the basis that the only true kindness to an
#author
is honesty. Lately, though, I've been pondering on how that shouldn't just mean "This part of your book is bad & you should fix it," but also "Your book is good & people will want to read it." ๐๐

I mean, also, just last week I had a sale and I got $0.92, and I couldn't figure out where it had come from as I wasn't running any discounts or anything... Turned out I had sold a print copy of The Lion in Canada for $12.99, where I try to keep the prices lower, b/c reasons (AUS too). So yeah. ๐๐

The other day I was browsing ebooks, sorta chagrined b/c I'm not interested in paying $18.00 for an ebook. Then I realized I was also skipping books that I thought were too low, like $2.99. Then I considered how MY books were all ~$2.99. So anyway, then I raised the price on all my

My perhaps boring opinion about sci-fi is I wish there were fewer "infection" stories. So many new books have interesting setups, but in the end just end up being "and everyone gets infected with [THING]." I understand WHY those books are published, but I find them a done-to-death
#scifi
idea.
