Wherever you live, chances are local authorities about this transformation in Paris, and know they could follow its lead. They just prefer convenience for car owners over safety for kids.

Day in, day out, I speak to ordinary people who are organising to welcome the asylum seekers accommodated in their towns. They befriend, support them, reach out to them as fellow human beings. That's the Britain I know, the one I see around me & we never get told about on TV.

Meanwhile, the Netherlands are just getting on with providing safe, convenient and free cycle parking in towns and cities, for anyone to use. For example, this cycle parking in Leiden, in the basement of the former V&D department store. Free to use for up to 14 days.

Meanwhile in Cambridge "Cyclists Dismount" signs are not allowed during works as I understand it. DfT IMO needs to ban them too, nationally.

As National Road Victim Month begins, it is to the 23 lives lost since the emergency was declared, and the countless others taken before that moment of recognition, we will not forget you.

This emergency won’t end on polling day. We must keep demanding more from those who represent us today, and those who seek to represent us tomorrow.

Our authorities - the Council, Combined Authority, and Police - are finally working together. Strategies are in place. The funding is there. What we need now is delivery: faster and braver than ever before.

And across Birmingham, communities are already demanding this change. Because they’ve had enough. We’ve all had enough. Tackling this emergency will be a marathon, not a sprint. It won’t go away on its own. Recognising the crisis was just the first step. But progress is starting.

Cities like Helsinki show us this is possible. They have not recorded a single traffic death in the past year. We know what must happen: • Reclaim our pavements • Redesign our streets • Rebuild our city’s transport choices • Enforce the rules of the road

We must stay focused on one goal: Vision Zero. Zero deaths. Zero serious injuries. In memory of those we’ve lost. For the safety of our friends, our families, our neighbours. And in hope for the generations to come.

There are those who say road deaths are just part of life in a busy city. We must never accept that. We cannot treat this as an unavoidable risk of getting around Birmingham.

Hundreds more have been seriously injured, many now facing long, uncertain roads to recovery. Some families at the demonstration today - and many more across the city - are still waiting for justice.

Since 31st July 2024, 23 more people have tragically lost their lives on our city’s streets. That’s 23 families shattered. 23 communities grieving. Each one a painful reminder of what reckless driving can take from us.
