This picture, by Rev James Douglas FSA from around 1787, is one of the earliest known depictions of barrow digging. In fact, Douglas may even be the clergyman wielding the pickaxe! Douglas was a keen antiquary and this drawing is one of the earliest depictions of barrow digging.
