At least by calling it the Department of War, Trump is being honest about what it is. America, like every empire, is built on the back of invasion, devastation, and murder. "Defense" is an obfuscation to mitigate the evil we all support with our taxes and complicity.

I think that modern Christianity is functionally Pelagian while desperately claiming to be Augustinian. And that's not really a bad thing imho. It is better for the kingdom of God to think we can make a difference to what happens in the world than not, even if it is ultimately only ever God moving.

I recently reread the Song of Solomon and began to note a number of interesting parallels between its romance and one of the only other Biblical romances, that of David and Jonathan.

It's not that conservative Christians aren't saved. God saves everyone. It's that a life lived without love for your neighbor makes the Christian faith meaningless beyond an escape from damnation. The liberation of God to the Christian is for this life, lived out by giving up this life for others.

In Jewish apocalyptic literature, Samael is the angel of death and possibly ha-satan. Importantly, he is also the guardian angel of Rome. Rereading the temptations as the ways that Rome tempts Jesus gives a much more precise understanding of so many of his anti-empire teachings.
