I never knew musicians before that movie but to get up in front of people and rock out is scary. Putting up a protective ego is practical but sometimes that can get out of control. Spinal Tap punched some air holes in that, let it breathe. It made the big ego moments ridiculous and recognizable.

Regarding Reiner, I have known a lot of musicians and been in bands myself. I can’t overstate the importance of This Is Spinal Tap in adjusting the self-importance of musicians. Everyone knows the movie, everyone has identified Spinal Tap moments, everyone is humbler and funnier as a result.
