We went down to the Croton river to check out the ice today. As the water level changes the edges freeze at different heights, forming lots of layers of ice. The ice can have beautiful textures like bubbles and branches.

Woo-hoo! Saw a red bellied woodpecker this morning! Also the usual assortment of sparrows, juncos, jays, cardinals and squirrels.

I used the leaf blower to clear the thin layer of snow from our steps today. The bird feeder is hanging off the landing. The (mostly junco) feet compressed the snow, leaving a positive track! For comparison, tracks in the snow on our protected porch where I put food out on the railing. So cute!

We walked down to the Croton river this morning to check out the river’s frozen edge. Saw a couple of ducks, one with a cinnamon head. I’d guess green winged teal based on range. Lots of folks out walking today before the snow comes in.

Today I watched the birds all by myself as my cats had a busy napping schedule due to yesterday’s immunizations. They missed out on the tentative lady cardinal next to all the little song sparrows. She gets scared off easily but she’s so pretty.

There are robins in the privets, pecking about at the berries. Now I have to decide if that is a good enough reason to keep one of them. I really dislike privets but these are very excited birds.

Maybe we should stick to a message this simple.

I walked by Duck Pond Park today, which was flying a red flag with the “No Skating Today” sign posted. Saw a happy husky bounding in the snowy lawns while its people stayed on the shoveled sidewalks. Two deer ran past me later. Got scolded by a blue jay. Watched some crows yelling as they passed by.

I just love it when my cats alert me to the drama in the trees! Blue jay just chased the nuthatch off of the pine trunk while lady cardinal watched from the dogwood. It’s cold and windy this morning and she was a perfect borb.

I’m at an airport looking at a ridiculously elaborate animated display with what look like paper butterflies. I saw so many amazing butterflies over the last couple of weeks. Little, big, subtle, bold, and in so many colors. My brain is filled with all of the natural beauty I saw.
