The drought has been so pronounced that the effects are discernible in satellite imagery. Here is a comparison with mid September last year. Note the yellow/brown agricultural lands compared to generally greener ones a year prior.

From the 'cool' file 😊 : While browsing through some very high-rez satellite imagery I spotted this effect of low cloud/fog in a stable air mass moving past an island in the Bay of Fundy. I've seen this effect before and it has analogies to the wake behind a speed boat.

It is quite rare for the Hawaiian Islands to be impacted directly from a tropical storm or hurricane but 'Kiko' may bring some windy/rainy weather there next week. Also - when the Pacific Ocean is busy with tropical cyclones, the Atlantic is usually quiet and vice versa.

Just emptied 57.6mm from my gauge! The automatic stations from the CB mesonet show a swath of tropical rainfalls (40-80mm) from Halifax to Sydney. Unfortunately the Annapolis Valley only had a few mm. BTW, the rainfall chart from the EU model I posted yesterday did well predicting this pattern.

Update on the recent rainfall ... as of 5pm. About 8 mm (1/3") around Halifax so far. 2.5 mm (1/10") around the Long Lake Fire. Much more needed. At least fire behaviour there today is much less aggressive.

Breathtaking animation of Hurricane Erin this morning. As many have already noted, it's a big storm, with tropical-storm-force (34+ knot) winds extending hundreds of miles from its center as shown by the yellow line in the below image. Blue line represents area of hurricane-force (64+ knot) winds.

Here's what our Friday weather should look like - a near encounter with Erin well offshore. The storm circulation is large though - high altitude cloud, gusty offshore winds (~30G50 km/h), high ~18-20C and heavy surf (careful at the coast). No rain to ease our drought. #nswx

We were in Annapolis Royal NS this afternoon visiting #FortAnneNHS . Here was the view of the Long Lake fire smoke plume from there. Also note the exceedingly dry grounds due to the drought.

Sullivan's Pond in Dartmouth remains very low with the fountain system fully exposed. Only 1/2 mm (1/50 of an inch) of rain fell last night so the drought continues.

Hottest day of the summer (so far) for many parts of Nova Scotia. A few spots around 35C/95F! (that's the shade temperature, and not even factoring in humidity).

Cool waters along the Atlantic Coast of Nova Scotia due to recent wind patterns. This impacts the local weather too - including city core. Air is several degrees cooler than usual in onshore wind. Also fog occurrence will be much more likely with any upcoming humid air masses.

Been a dry summer so far across much of the Atlantic Canada - here's a little update on the extent to which rainfall has been below normal. For instance, only about 30 mm has fallen in central NS during the 40-day period when normal for that period is ~120 mm.

Let's check in and see how July temperatures have changed (trended) over the last 75 years. Not great. Part of the story out west is a concurrent decrease in precipitation creating a feedback cycle. 🔥
