Just a little reminder that in the space of two years the Maritimes were treated to a total solar eclipse, and then this year a partial solar eclipse at sunrise. Incredibly (and it really is!) the sky co-operated for both! Here's the partial sun rising on March 29th 2025 over Halifax harbour.

Here's a callery pear on the SMU campus blooming in late September. I had a minor freak out on seeing this, but apparently the trees will do this after periods of stress, most notably drought. It's only a couple of blooms as well, most of the rest of the buds are dormant.

Just finished hosting the annual Canadian astronomy research conference (CASCA) at Saint Mary's U. in Halifax. That's "Squinty" the conference mascot in the pic. We loved hosting everyone and it was amazing to receive a standing ovation at the end. But I truly miss 2015 sci twitter. #CASCA2025

I'm just going to do a quiet little shout out to this year's class in Einstein's General Relativity at SMU. It was, without question, the most successful GR class I have ever taught in almost 20 years. Congrats and well done to all.

I had little idea of the potential explosive nature of tank ruptures. If you have liquid stored at pressure above it's normal atmospheric boiling point, then a rupture can lead to sudden vapourization of the liquid. This process is called a boiling liquid expansion vapour explosion (BLEVE).

If you are thinking about getting the shingles vaccine and you have a less demanding schedule on the weekends, might not be a bad idea to get it on a Friday as a precaution. Got mine yesterday (Sat) and feel pretty rough today due to body aches and fatigue.

The light was bright but low at Oakfield prov park today. It created some great opportunities for intimate close-ups of the growth there. Here's a detail image relying on planes of focus of a fallen spruce tree. The rhythm of the growth just pulls you in. #photography
