Watches are becoming warnings, and we now have an ICE STORM warning in northern Mississippi, northwest Alabama and southwest Tennessee. We'll see that warning expand this afternoon. Winer storm warnings are in the pink.

We are VERY concerned about a possibly significant ice storm in extreme northeast Georgia and western parts of the Carolinas in the higher terrain. Cold air bleeding south down the Appalachians will keep the surface below freezing longer, promoting continued icing.

D.C., Baltimore, Philly... Saturday we’re good. Get home by 9, 10 p.m. Snow comes in overnight, becomes moderate to heavy by 5 a.m. Sunday. Maybe a flip to sleet or freezing rain for a few hours Sunday lunchtime to early afternoon.

Winter storm watches now span 1,600 miles, and it's likely they'll be expanded all the way to the Delmarva Peninsula and East Coast overnight. From Arizona to Assateague, a big winter storm is brewing. Specifics are TBD, but high confident in major impacts for a lot of folks.

Just like dollar-cost averaging is wiser long-range than picking one stock and going all-in, so too is using a model blend for overall TRENDS. The general broad-brushed trend is this: biggest ice accretion likely in the foothills of the Appalachians and in northern Mississippi. Details TBD.

This will be a HUGE winter storm geographically... half the country's population will be clobbered by wintry weather. We'll see high-end impacts from Oklahoma to the East Coast. For now, just know this: we STILL don't know who will get what type of wintry precipitation. But big storm is coming.

Ice doesn’t need to be deep to be destructive. Around 0.25 inches starts damaging trees and power lines. 0.50 inches brings widespread outages. 0.75 inches or more leads to severe, long-lasting impacts. This storm could place parts of the South and Southeast into those higher-risk categories.

No matter how you slice it, this will be a very memorable, severe and impactful winter storm. The South will likely be shut down for days.

This will be a crippling ice storm for millions of residents in the Deep South and Southeast. While the placement of the axis of heaviest ice remains uncertain, it's looking like a high-end event that will essentially shut down commerce and travel for days.

Beyond ice, there is a solid chance of 6 to 12 inches of snow from Oklahoma all the way to the Mid-Atlantic. This graphic below is the European ensemble model – a compilation of many tweaked versions of the same model run. It's used to simulate the envelope of possibilities.

BREAKING: A G4 SEVERE geomagnetic storm has begin RIGHT NOW! As soon as the sun sets, skywatchers across much of the United States should look northwards – assuming these conditions continue. New warning for G4 conditions issued by Space Weather Prediction Center!

Flights over the poles may need to be rerouted tonight. That's because, for the first time since 2003, an S4 solar radiation storm is ongoing! Passengers and crew on polar flights may receive elevated doses of ionizing radiation, which can increase long-term health risks (including cancer).

All these little speckles are solar energetic particles and protons bombarding SOHO, or the Solar and Heliophysics Observatory in space. They've been accelerated by an incoming CME, or magnetic shockwave. It's a sign of a particularly intense geomagnetic storm approaching.

A G4+ watch for severe geomagnetic storming has been issued by NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center. That suggests the potential for widespread auroral displays IF the CME (magnetic shockwave) hits Earth rather directly around the anticipated time (tonight 8 p.m. ETish).

WOW! We now have a winter storm WARNING in southern/southeastern Georgia! 1 to 3 inches of snow are possible Sunday. Last January's storm brought 3 inches to Macon. Prior to that, the last inch fell on 1/18/2018.

This isn't a fully-winter event; we see a front coming through just enough cold air on the back side to flip rain to snow. Here's a model that looks pretty solid with the timing and precipitation type:

Getting anything more than just flurries in the Carolinas would require a slightly stronger surface low offshore. Then it would be more "sucky", for lack of a better term, and draw cooler air in from the west, slightly increasing snow chances. That remains unclear.

Welp... despite all the hype and the colorful maps and plots you've probably seen on social media, this is what the National Weather Service is forecasting – only flurries in the Southeast. Science is measured – not hype-driven.

We have only a weak surface low; so why is the Deep South getting some cold rain and a few snowflakes? A lobe of vorticity, or spin, will accompany the approach of an upper-level system. That will foster ascent, or rising motion. And that lift generates precipitation.

Congratulations, Florida. You're officially colder than ALASKA. Yes, really. (The air mass over Florida right now is legitimately an Arctic air mass. It was over the Chukchi Sea north of Alaska about a week ago. Prior to that, Siberia and the Bering Strait.)

FRIDAY, January 16, 2025 will feature strong winds across the High Plains and Rockies. A surface low over the Great Lakes will swirl a cold front southeast. That will bring relative humidities of 12-20% across western Oklahoma, western Kansas and eastern Colorado, leading to high fire danger.
