Today we’re recovering #Ocean Bottom #Seismometers from near Cape St. James at the southern tip of #HaidaGwaii. They’ve been listening for a year and we hope they’ll tell us more about how the Pacific, North America and Explorer #TectonicPlates interact in this complex triple junction. #PACSAFE2025

Had a sporty day yesterday on #PACSAFE2025: an instrument released early so we had to make a 3hr detour to get it before the storm carried it off. 4m seas by the time we got to it, but the awesome deck crew of the 🇨🇦 #CoastGuard Tully pulled it off no problem. Today we start PACSAFE recoveries!

Our USGS colleagues who help run the seismic network in conjunction with @caltechseismo.bsky.social are no longer allowed to stay in a hotel (new sudden DOGE rule). Some sites in the network require 5 - 8 hours of driving to get to them. Our network will suffer.

Another magnitude roughly 5 #earthquake in #bc last night. Are they related?! Almost definitely not. The earthquake on Friday was near #Sechelt but last night’s event was way off the coast of Vancouver Island, on a totally different fault system. Earthquakes in this location happen much more often!
