"If they paid attention everyone would like this" isn't really how art works! It's OK to like something because you like it, not because it's objectively good.

I have become fully jokerified on the issue of reminding people on the internet that art is subjective. Stop saying films/shows/bands etc are “overrated,” just say you don’t like them! Or they’re not for you! Is that film “bad” or did you just not enjoy it?

The really impressive thing is that I made it this long without popping a blood vessel in my eye.

I just finished reading a book by an author (not an internet name) whose stuff I binged circa 2012, and god it’s nice to read something that feels so far removed from the discourse of how smart/cultured/“right” I might be because of the fraction of my life that is represented by my enjoying a book.

Twitter was never a very good platform for debate or persuasion even before it became a Nazi roachpit. Brief text snippets are terrible for conveying nuance and the public platform means it's hard to find common ground. It's always been a watercooler for people you generally agree with.

It took me an extremely long time to learn that you can still plan and execute an excellent event while not overcomplicating things, and planning an event with people 10 years your junior who haven’t realized this is a special form of hell.

Tonight I decided it was helpful to make a list of writing affirmations, since I always run into mental blocks when I write (I want to write!) Some are too personal to post, but I wanted to share others in case they resonate and ask anyone if they’re interested or willing to share any of their own.

I feel like my issue with the way people often express themselves in fandom is their inability to see the difference between these two takes: I hate The Great Gatsby and think it’s terrible. Anyone who likes The Great Gatsby is stupid and has bad taste and I am better than them for disliking it.

The most upsetting lesson you learn in your twenties and thirties (and god I suspect in your forties, fifties, etc.) is that whatever friendship dynamics traumatized you in elementary and high school don’t get to stay there and will, in fact, play out in your life over and over again.
