"If they paid attention everyone would like this" isn't really how art works! It's OK to like something because you like it, not because it's objectively good.

I have become fully jokerified on the issue of reminding people on the internet that art is subjective. Stop saying films/shows/bands etc are “overrated,” just say you don’t like them! Or they’re not for you! Is that film “bad” or did you just not enjoy it?

I see that I have to listen to Taylor albums the same way I have to watch Bridgerton or read certain books—in a cave where I can avoid any discourse so I can form my own opinions.

Gotta say, as the youngest daughter who is the only one in my family who bothers with therapy and is also (less importantly) a better travel planner and airport navigator, these eldest daughter memes are tiresome.

I just finished reading a book by an author (not an internet name) whose stuff I binged circa 2012, and god it’s nice to read something that feels so far removed from the discourse of how smart/cultured/“right” I might be because of the fraction of my life that is represented by my enjoying a book.

every day i see hundreds of comments of people spinning elaborate scenarios to explain how trump can control everything and all opposition is futile. a) i think a lot of you need to log off and stop following professional doomsayers. b) i think a lot of you are cowards

Twitter was never a very good platform for debate or persuasion even before it became a Nazi roachpit. Brief text snippets are terrible for conveying nuance and the public platform means it's hard to find common ground. It's always been a watercooler for people you generally agree with.

It took me an extremely long time to learn that you can still plan and execute an excellent event while not overcomplicating things, and planning an event with people 10 years your junior who haven’t realized this is a special form of hell.

Another day in which I’ve gotten distracted from my Before Sunrise AU by basically cutting myself open all over the draft of my Before Sunset AU. I realize this sounds very dramatic.

The feeling induced by the slightest hint that you’ve purposely been excluded from something with your friends (even though you almost certainly haven’t!) not long after having a Rough Time about another friendship is akin to being chased by a bear. One that shouts your flaws out as it chases you.

Thanks to my excessive muting, I'm just now seeing that someone tried to pull me into some BlueSky beef. To clarify, there's a big difference between a private convo in which you share that an author isn't for you, and a larger, public conversation piling on to an author or authors.

The follow-up is that I am actually embarrassed by how I still find Burr more relatable (in a lot of ways) than Hamilton 💀.

If I ever conclude that Bluesky has become intolerable to me in one way or another— perfectly possible!— I wouldn’t go back to Twitter. I’m not providing free content for Musk’s Nazi propaganda machine no matter what. Telling me bad things about Bluesky is genuinely irrelevant to that.

That feeling when you’re working with your therapist on the line between “your loss, asshole” and “there is something fundamentally reject-able about me” and then you get to throw in a job search and all the rejection that comes along with that.

Tonight I decided it was helpful to make a list of writing affirmations, since I always run into mental blocks when I write (I want to write!) Some are too personal to post, but I wanted to share others in case they resonate and ask anyone if they’re interested or willing to share any of their own.

I feel like my issue with the way people often express themselves in fandom is their inability to see the difference between these two takes: I hate The Great Gatsby and think it’s terrible. Anyone who likes The Great Gatsby is stupid and has bad taste and I am better than them for disliking it.

It’s time to reconsolidate a counterculture and politics against this shit. Science, art, medicine, poetry, philosophy as the beautiful life, the fullness of human civilization, that they want to destroy. Humanism, not cynicism, not slop, not tech “””nerd””” culture

The most upsetting lesson you learn in your twenties and thirties (and god I suspect in your forties, fifties, etc.) is that whatever friendship dynamics traumatized you in elementary and high school don’t get to stay there and will, in fact, play out in your life over and over again.
