DARVO, a term coined by researcher Jennifer Freyd, stands for Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim and Offender. It’s a weapon in the Quicksand Model® of coercive control, where abusers deny their wrongdoing, attack the victim’s credibility, and reverse the roles so the real victims are painted as the offenders. Let’s look at two real examples from the last 3 weeks: Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother, was shot by ICE agents while attempting to follow their conflicting commands, yet officials labeled her actions as “domestic terrorism.” Then there’s Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse with no criminal record, who was legally carrying and shot while holding a cellphone—again, labeled a “domestic terrorist.” This is textbook DARVO: deny the unjustified force, attack the victims by calling them “terrorists,” and reverse the roles so federal agents become the supposed victims. This isn’t about isolated incidents—it’s a systematic pattern. When those in power use lethal force and then blame their victims as “terrorists,” that’s coercive control and institutional betrayal.
