Alice Wong was one of the most effective people challenging the Whiteness of disability communities and its many flaws, but who believed fiercely in us as a community, in disabled people as oracles. Alice brought so much to so many of us, it’s hard to measure the kind of gratitude I have for that.

This is a wonderful way to grieve: Alice worked tirelessly to raise awareness about why Palestine was a disability justice issue and to raise funds for Gaza.

I woke up to the news that @sfdirewolf.bsky.social has passed away. I made sure to always give Alice her flowers when we texted or saw each other. I know she knew how much I loved her & appreciated the way she believed in & supported me. But I still wish I could tell her one last time.

I keep seeing, "I saw someone post about being hungry yesterday so I gave them groceries" posts. Please don't post about keeping us fed for a pat on the back. We see those posts & it reminds us that people may help us & then ask friends for applause.

Giving people things they don't actually need but things you believe they need can sometimes be worse than doing nothing at all. One way to start helping is to ask what they're really struggling with, what might make it less of a struggle, and give them time to think about it.

This is a really important thread. Help is vital, but help with thoughtfulness, respect, and dignity makes all the difference for those who need it. These are really important suggestions.

We see your maskless selfies at those "protests." We see you spreading COVID. We see you making it unsafe for immunocompromised folks (& everyone else). We see you supporting fascists who ban masks. We see you fighting for so-called justice while ignoring disabled people.

It's been seven years since I was awarded permanent disability (SSDI) and it'll only take three more years for me to have received enough in SSDI to match the annual salary of the judge who approved my case.

People who've been oppressed for generations; who've had our history written [out] by white abled cishet men; who've been eugenicized, marginalized, ostracized, illegalized, institutionalized, traumatized, proselytized... We said this was coming. Maybe listen to us.

They're killing disabled people. They're disabling people. They're killing disabled people. They're killing starving people. They're starving people. They're killing starving people. They're killing.

The thing about fascism, eugenics, genocide (etc) is they will always blame disabled people for not surviving fascism, eugenics & genocide. Some of you who will be pissed about this NYT thing are still going around using the line, "People dying from COVID had pre-existing conditions."

All technology is assistive. It's just not always accessible.

Outrageous. The White House is sidestepping Congress and halting up to $15 billion in NIH research funding, which would have gone to study diabetes, cancer & more. The order was issued through a four-sentence email sent to NIH directors from Office of Management & Budget Director Russell Vought.

Anything that helps a disabled person navigate life more easily & with fewer barriers is an accessibility aid. Including dishwashers, shower chairs, safe housing, no strings attached money & doing away with asset limits & benefits cliffs. Everyone deserves these things, period.

Please stop using the word "mute" to describe people. It is ableist language.

When I was little, the U.S. military came to our home at gunpoint and took me and my family away. We were imprisoned for years in barbed wire camps simply because we were Japanese American. I have spent my life telling that story, hoping it would never be repeated.

Stranger: "What's it called when you're explaining something & you give context & history for every point to make sure people fully understand every aspect of what you're saying & you wrap all the points into one final statement & then you applaud internally?" Me: "Autistic?"

When you’re asked to consider disability justice, it’s never “instead of” a different cause. It’s a call to support every justice movement deeply & effectively. Climate change, capitalism, fascism, racism, transphobia, sexism, genocide, &c are disabling. They want to disable those who resist, too.

I'm so tired of people equating being disabled with being evil, undesirable, gross. The disability community has an amazing cultural history of justice work, community care, innovation, joy, and knowledge. When you use ableist slurs to describe something negative, you perpetuate harm against us.

The White House's war on disabled Americans continues, going above and beyond Project 2025—now with attacks on a popular hiring program no one even lobbied against.

Let me be clear: I will have to terminate my insurance policy if this happens. I am already paying $700/month for a marketplace plan. Good thing Gavin's been pushing for more inpatient beds because it looks like I'm going to need one! That I won't be able to afford!

"Disabled people can just move to a different country" Sure! I'll book a shipping container with my disabled riches, heaps of cash left after paying rent that's 95% of my income & special diet groceries my food stamps & the food bank doesn't cover.

Taking care of community by: - checking on a few friends a few times a week - wearing a mask - educating people about an issue - documenting state/fed harm - showing up remotely - sharing community support requests... ... makes a difference.

Wearing masks is a vital part of community care. Without masks, you are not caring about your community. Without masks, community suffers & many are actively excluded. What kind of community are you building if you make it inaccessible to 1/4-1/2 of the people around you?
