If long dependencies are cognitively costly @rferrericancho.bsky.social, why are SOV languages so widespread? In a new #Glottometrics paper, I argue that once you count the arguments actually used, long dependencies are far less problematic. Takeaway: don’t trust SOV/SVO labels—look at real usage!

I think we should stop using the label "null results". It's a misnomer that devalues the importance of research findings. Research is a competition of hypotheses. Any outcome of this competition advances science, no matter how strongly attached we are to our own theories. 1/3
