It's always great to see how #sphagnum plugs are getting on. These plugs, planted on rewetted moorland at Rishworth, are already showing their bright green colours. Sphagnum can hold up to 20 times its weight in water, so its growth on the moors helps to keep these #peatlands boggy and healthy.

Today is the 23rd birthday of Moors for the Future Partnership. The Partnership started as a single project in 2003, restoring the area around Black Hill in the South Pennines, and has since worked on over 250 sq km of blanket bog, bringing life back to this degraded but precious landscape.

Yesterday we attended the "Think Green Tameside: Climate Action Conference", where our Partnership Manager, Matt Scott-Campbell, spoke about the benefits of moorland restoration and where we had many positive conversations with stakeholders in the #Tameside area. @tamesidecouncil.bsky.social

Our Conservation & Land Management team go out in all weathers to conduct vital surveying work for future projects (although in this case the snow yesterday forced them to cut short the day and return to base earlier than planned!)

Last weekend we were pleased to give students from Sheffield Hallam University hands-on experience of moorland restoration, sphagnum planting in the Goyt Valley. Luckily we were able to find a sheltered gully in which they could recharge their batteries and have lunch!

1/2 This month we completed our annual dip well campaign. Every week from September until Christmas, our #science team and volunteers go out in all weathers to check the depth of the water table. The dip wells are checked manually, by blowing down a tube which is lowered into the well. #Peatlands

This expressive common frog was spotted on the Goyt Valley , enjoying the boggy conditions facilitated by sphagnum moss. Our peatland landscapes are being put on a trajectory towards re-wetting, but wildfire can still destroy precious peatland habitats in minutes. If you spot a fire, dial 999

March 2025 was reportedly one of the driest since records began and with that has come an increased risk of wildfire, with numerous occurrences being reported across the country, which is devastating for wildlife.

How could you measure biodiversity gain of rewetted peatland on an exposed moorland plateau over 500 metres above sea level? You listen. Students from the University of Derby have recorded audio of birds and bats on Combs Moss moor, and will now be doing an acoustic survey of the site every Spring

It’s heart-lifting to see water behind a peat dam, filled with sphagnum moss close to land that has in the past suffered catastrophic wildfire. A balloon in the pool is heart breaking though. The balloon was likely bought by someone without them realising it would end up as litter on the moors.

This sphagnum was planted in the pool created by a gully block in 2018. It's fantastic to see its amazing growth and to know the good it's doing in terms of carbon capture, natural flood management and improving water quality #peatlandsmatter

Thank you so much to our lovely volunteers who today planted a whopping 8,000 sphagnum moss plugs plants at the Goyt Valley site. Their enthusiasm and hard work is really appreciated. They were hopefully inspired by seeing the sphagnum moss planted only one season ago is growing well on the site.
