(this is not a rebuttal to OP) I have run a lot of other games lately and many of them make me appreciate D&D 5e even more. As a GM I sometimes like the relatively deterministic outcome of 5e combat. I like playing on a grid. I also do not want the build insanity of 4e or 3.5.

I've been re-reading a lot of "classic" science fiction lately and look, very little to none of it "holds up". There's a lot of great ideas and great writing, but few great characters and lots of junk as well.
