The full transcript of Zohran Mamdani's acceptance speech is very much worth reading in full. Even if you don't agree with your politics, it's very beautifully put together.

La clessidra sta lì muta, un sospiro, un battito, un addio, difendo i granelli, sabbia tra le dita, dal vento inclemente che li vuole rapire; li serbo nel pugno, segreto di vita, finché il tempo non scenda, lieve a coprire

1/2 According to Flemish folktales, Die Gnydige was a witch who could shapeshift into a cat. The villagers grew tired of her gatherings to which hundreds of cats came, and burned down her den. The felines walked unharmed through the flames and chased the men away.

So, John and I worked on this book forever and ever. Calling it a labor of love is a bit cliché. A labor of obsession? Of adoration? The Penguin Book of the International Short Story comes out on April 7, 2026 (from
@penguinpress.bsky.social
, of course). Just check out the stories in the book . . .

Portrait of Andrea Quaratesi (1512-1585), "a young Florentine noble whose friendship with Michelangelo, from whom he took drawing classes, is documented in letters. Michelangelo undertook portraits unwillingly, probably only at the subject's insistence". (British Museum)

Some days "progress" is a just base coat or one good line of text. It's prep for what's to come, when it comes. Go easy on yourself.

Beatrice Orchard Carter (1889-1939) was a South African botanical illustrator. She produced ophthalmic drawings for an oculist, D. J. Wood. She was appointed as an artist at the Bolus Herbarium in Cape Town in 1926. Her early death left unfinished much of the artwork she had begun.

The big thing I did this year and haven't been able to say much about up until now is that I was SOMEHOW asked to illustrate the new Folio Society edition of A Christmas Carol, introduced by Simon Callow. Bit of a dream job.

This is a great read. My three favourite Redford films are Jeremiah Johnson, Three Days of the Condor and Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid. Plus, Reagan’s use of the CIA to fight proxy wars was a central theme of The Americans, one of my all time favourite series
