I don't know which trans kid needs to hear this, but - you are not consigned to a lifetime 'unable to pass' if you have not started blockers / hormones by 18. This is not to minimise the impact of this abhorrently cruel policy that flies in the face of all international best practice and research.

Medical transition for trans kids is now banned for new referrals on the NHS. Trans kids in the UK can still go private or DIY (for now). This means the new clinics that replaced GIDS are close to useless at best, conversion therapy at worst. 1/5

Having a bit of a moment thinking about the job versus career bits of being an academic. How I have always put a real shift in re admin, and how I am still getting feedback months later from students about how uniquely transformative ( ‘humane’, ‘compassionate’, ‘exceptional’) my teaching was.

It’s also worth repeating that, as of April 2025, it is the position under UK equality law that the actual sexualities and genders of binary trans people must be reversed. A straight trans woman is now only really protected by equality law if discriminated against as a gay man.
