1/ Here's how it works (for others, Oz knows). A story breaks and every news show needs guests to talk about it. A desperately overworked producer frantically searches Twitter/BlueSky and starts DMing people who seem like they have credentials. The producer likely knows nothing about the topic.

I'll tell you this for free, a lot of the people on the airwaves as Iran experts and Russia experts are the same people who got basically everything wrong on everything that has happened in the last 15 years. And yet, they are still on the airwaves presented as experts.

I have to say I strongly disagree with analysis that implies that Iran was on a path to eventual normalisation with the West and that these decapitations have pushed them into a further hardline position. That’s cope. War or not, Iran’s regime only had one path regardless.

The Trump Doctrine:

We are two weeks into this US-Israeli war on Iran and I still have no idea what their theory of victory is. The Iranian regime’s - survival - is not only clear, it is also achievable on a timeline that includes ramping up the economic cost for the west.

If we made the green energy transition this war would be unthinkable and these authoritarians wouldn’t be in power — not in the US, not in Iran, not in Saudi Arabia, not in Russia. Hydrocarbons are killing our freedom and just plain killing us.

As someone who was at the premiere of this documentary, I highly recommend everyone watches it. The scene on the bridge under fire, the moment when the camera crew and Oz are detained by Russians and the final reveal of mass graves have been etched into my memory until this day.

The Europeans have done all they can to try and make this proposal serious and credible, but a serious and credible ceasefire enforced by western forces is the exact opposite of what Putin wants, because Putin's objectives for the total capture of Ukraine remain unchanged.
