loading . . . Ukraine strikes multiple Russian regions with drones and missiles Ukraine launched a large-scale attack on several Russian regions overnight on May 5, triggering missile alerts in multiple areas, according to the Russian news agency Interfax .
Ukrainian monitoring channels Exilenova+ and Supernova+ report that a facility belonging to AO "VNIIR-Progress" in Cheboksary, the capital of the Chuvash Republic, was hit during the night and morning, sparking a fire.
The Ukrainian OSINT project Dnipro Osint claims the strikes were carried out with FP-5 "Flamingo" cruise missiles. The Telegram channel "Angry Chuvashia" says the facade of an administrative building caught fire and infrastructure was damaged, including the city's trolleybus network. There are also reports that a college building and the "MTV Center" in Cheboksary were damaged.
On the morning of May 5, the Chuvashia Health Ministry announced that three people were injured in the overnight attack on Cheboksary, including one in moderate condition and two with minor injuries.
Russia’s federal aviation authority introduced temporary restrictions on arrivals and departures at Cheboksary Airport following the attack.
VNIIR-Progress is part of the ABS Electro Group and manufactures electronic equipment, including systems for the Russian military. Its products include Kometa antennas, which are used to protect Shahed and Geran drones from electronic warfare, as well as satellite receivers for Kalibr and Iskander missiles.
Ukrainian drones have repeatedly targeted VNIIR-Progress, with the first such strike occurring in June 2025, temporarily halting production at the facility.
Russia’s Defense Ministry stated that from Monday evening until Tuesday morning, its forces destroyed 289 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory. According to the ministry, drones were shot down over Bryansk, Belgorod, Voronezh, Kursk, Kaluga, Smolensk, Oryol, Tver, Tula, Ryazan, Pskov, Novgorod, Leningrad, Rostov, and Volgograd regions, as well as the Moscow area, Crimea, Tatarstan, Krasnodar Krai, and the Sea of Azov.
Several governors reported overnight fires in their regions. Alexander Drozdenko, governor of Leningrad region, said a fire broke out at an industrial site in Kirishi after a drone attack, with the intended target believed to be the Kirishinefteorgsintez oil refinery.
