I'm a fan of pre-tests. Rather than assuming all people need training on an entire curriculum, test people on real-world problems (in a simulated environment, if needed) until they reach a point where they can no longer succeed. That's where that person's training begins. #LearnChat

Two keys to success: 1) As noted already, give people something to do, do not just tell them things. 2) Make it easy for them to recognize their progress. I am not trying to bring back badges, but a sufficiently designed ripple of ever-increasing challenges will work as well or better. #LearnChat

A7) Ask why people will care as part of your analysis. In your design, explicitly clarify the intrinsic motivation for the doer. Show them the benefit of application: how will learning this make them better, faster, the work easier, or them more valuable? #LearnChat

A6) An ability for them to move back and forth between levels at will, so they can set their own standard of difficulty. A "timeout" feature where they could jump into a real-world explanation/reminder of why this lesson is important. #LearnChat

A5) Storytelling, yes. Gamification, no. At least, not in terms of scorekeeping. It's not nearly as effective as people selling gamification systems would have you believe, and orgs rarely reinforce it. Looks pretty, but ineffective and subject to bias and confusion. #LearnChat

A4) I'd start with considering data/outputs designed to recognize it; people won't often communicate learning fatigue directly. Also, consider whether it is the pace, the complexity, or both causing the fatigue. If it's pace, use A/B testing to see what drives better response. #LearnChat

A3) I like to ensure people remain engaged by enabling a constant visualization of the parts for the whole. Keep them motivated by showing them where they are, what they've already accomplished, and what they have left to go. A marathon without mile markers is a daunting sojourn. #LearnChat

A2) For extrinsic motivation, be sure you've designed with an understanding of the stakeholder's wants/goals, so these can be explicitly communicated. For intrinsic motivation, consider what the learner needs for themselves to meet those goals. #LearnChat

A1) If I can both comprehend the principle(s) of the thing, and see how I can apply it in my work, then I'm immediately spurred to put it into action to test myself. #LearnChat
