Q7: With skills evolving so quickly, how can organizations keep their skills-based learning strategies relevant?

Q6) Start with giving people specific positive feedback on things they do well. I realize that seems obvious, but... #learnchat

THIS is a great question! I think in many cases employees feel pressured to (at least say) they have 100 skills, and sometimes don't recognize which they are good at, which they need to work on, and which just may not be their thing. Surprise: I won't ever be a gymnast. #learnchat

I like Jean's answer. Job analysis. It can be an arduous process to start but keep it up and it pay off. Especially in a task-based roles. #LearnChat

A5) Personalized learning works when it’s tied to real goals, supported by managers, and embedded in daily work. It’s not just about personalized content; it's about personalized context. #LearnChat

Right! I get asked to teach Business Writing to fix poor writing when the real issue is developmental English learning by folks learning a new language. Teaching how to write an email doesn't pinpoint and help fix that. Good communication is so broad. #learnchat

#learnchat A4) Written and verbal communication are often looked at outside of work contexts, but as a leader, someone who can clearly articulate a problem, potential solutions, their recommendation and impact is priceless. Getting specific with tasks and success metrics is key

Q4) I say, again (and again) that L&D is uniquely positioned in an organization to know where dots between people -- or skills-- can connect. #learnchat

I see them trying to use Personal Development Plans, and 360 assessments, and mapping competencies to org values. None of which I think do a good job of acually identifying and development transferable skills. Seem like "oh this tool will help us do it" "no maybe this one" #LearnChat

We need to inisist on specificity and personalization of skills. "Communication" cannot be a skill writ large for an entire company. What does it mean to be a good communicator in Marketing vs IT vs Product Management. How are those skills evinced in measurable ways? #LearnChat

Q4 People get really hung up on titles and lists of tasks. One of my own more successful endeavors was connecting people in the org who created great presentations. We stored these online; some people offered to mentor or give feedback to others. #LearnChat

Q4: How can L&D teams support the identification and development of transferable skills across departments? #LearnChat

Q3: Have you ever been in a role where your skills mattered more than your formal job description? What was that like? #LearnChat

#learnchat A2) Measuring/assessing skills is definitely not something most people or orgs are good at! Asking for feedback and taking advantage of opportunities for assessment are things I focus on myself.
