Shout out to Long John Reilly, who made his living primarily as an artist (b/c baseball wasn't a practical job in the 1880s) & survived a shipwreck during his first major league season. Years ago I drew every member of the Reds Hall of Fame (

Who is the most underrated professional Canadian baseball player? A strong case could be made for Eleanor Callow, who was born on this date in Winnipeg in 1927. She's the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League's all-time HR leader (55) and all-time triples leader (60). She died in 1974.

An oddity just noticed: Hal O'Hagan took part in seven triple plays between 1898 and 1907, all in the minor leagues, plus two in the majors. One of these, on August 18, 1902, was an unassisted triple play, and was long regarded as the first such.

The day after trade deadline feels like a good time to mention that the price of an annual FanGraphs membership is going up from $60 to $80 on Monday. The good news is that this makes a three-year membership for $150 a massive bargain for the next 72 hours.

The undersized Billy Wagner came from a broken home and an impoverished background. He channeled his frustrations into throwing incredibly hard — with his left hand, for the natural righty broke his right arm twice as a child.

Left-hander Tom Drees who threw not one, not two, but three no-hitters for the triple-A Vancouver Canadians, then a Chicago White Sox affiliate, in 1989 turns 62 today. Happy Birthday to him! P.S. Despite those three no-hitters, the White Sox never called him up that season.

86 years ago today, after belting two home runs off A's starter Bob Joyce the previous day, Yankees outfielder George Selkirk (Huntsville, Ont.) clubbed two more off Joyce when Joyce entered the game in relief. With that, Selkirk homered in four consecutive at bats vs. Joyce in two days.
