On this day in 1837, Anderson Ruffin Abbott was born in Toronto. He was the first Black Canadian to be licenced as a physician. He later served as a surgeon during the American Civil War and stood vigil for Abraham Lincoln after he was shot. He died in 1913 in Toronto.
