A gorgeous assassin bug (bee assassin, Apiomerus sp., I think A. flaviventris) spotted by @mhedin.bsky.social at night during our recent macro workshop in Anza-Borrego Desert, CA. This species is known to collect plant resins and apply them to their eggs as a protective chemical coating. #Bugsky 🐙🌿

For the past 13 years I’ve gotten into the spring salon at the Springville museum of art. I find out tomorrow if I got in this year. It’s not a big deal if I don’t get in, but I really don’t want to break my record.

This weekend I plan on heading up the canyon to get some sticks for a painting. It’s going to be a bunch of different kinds of stick Insects lined up but periodically there will be a real stick thrown in. I’ll call it, I’m a stick.

I don't remember seeing an image of Earth before that captures the (thin, fragile, tiny layer of) atmosphere so clearly. I mean, look at that.

I set up my voicemail on my phone to me talking about the ribs of cicadas. Every time I order more art prints and they call me to let me know that they’re done, I let it go to voicemail so they have to hear the cicada fact every single time.

How many people here know about the ribs of cicadas? 👀

One of the frustrating things about having learning disabilities that affect your writing is you can spend so much time thinking you’re writing a complete masterpiece, double checking everything. Then you read it the next morning and everything’s backwards and there’s 25 words in a made up language

Every time I talk about blue pigmentation and structural color in animals there’s one person that argues that the differences don’t matter because if it looks blue then it’s just blue. But learning the differences is part of what makes science so cool! It turns out those differences do matter.

Congrats to the Artemis II crew and all involved! It has been such a pleasure to watch, am in awe :)

Sadly, I don’t have the ability to single-handedly stop the atrocities that are happening. But one thing I can do is not run around like a headless chicken spreading panic and expect everyone else to do the same.

It is apparently just a law of the internet that there will always be some small number of people who read a post that says “I really hate it when people do this thing” and are surprised at being blocked when they immediately respond by doing this thing (“ironically”)

Once someone DM me for feet pics so I sent them pictures of insect feet. They were not amused.

I made a roast all by myself today which is a big deal, and one of my 70-year-old roommates said It reminded him of his mother‘s cooking. 😭
