I wonder what a thoughtful discussion about the definition of “merit” would produce. There’s a reason we have hiring and admissions committees instead of just spreadsheets.

PhD students/applicants, postdocs, PIs: brainstorming sessions are happening all over about various ways to support you. When specific research funding facts are known and things are clearer, the plans can crystallize. It’s hard to trust when it’s not public yet, but talk to your leaders!

Not surprising, but we may see more and more AI-assisted reference letters for lots of reasons (busy faculty, language barriers, etc.). While we wait for fixes -whatever those might someday be - we can understand the biases and try to filter them out of our decision-making. 🧪
