Finishing up my syllabus for a course on Broadway (a first for me). It feels insane to me that The Music Man and West Side Story both premiered in 1957. The music, the plots, the characters they depict… the AMERICA they depict, all feel like they belong in different decades, if not centuries.

One of my favorite things to do is to actually read a book that we all just sort of know through cultural osmosis. There’s always something surprising.

LRT(S?) has me thoughtful and sad. I’ve been moving away from requiring papers in my undergrad classes because it feels like incentivizing cheating. But the only reason I know how to write, at all, is that I had to crank out 6-10 mediocre term papers per year, every year, for a solid decade or so…

God exactly. The purpose of writing papers is FOR YOU TO THINK SOMETHING THROUGH, not because a prof has a deficit in their life that needs to be filled by reading 5-7 pages of mediocre bullshit. The bulk of things I recall from undergrad are things I wrote papers about.
