Husband and I were just comparing pay. He’s in a unionized faculty and his salary has increased 14% over 2 years. I’m in a non-union position and mine has increased 7.5% in 4 years (plus my retirement matching has been cut in half). 🙃🙃 as if there weren’t a million reasons to unionize already

The more I think abt this the more it annoys me. Imagine spending 6 years researching important ideas in a PhD program but during the last year of the program AI gains momentum and departments start chasing an "academic bit coin" instead of hiring grads who can contribute to the field immediately.

Usage rates at the writing center at my SLAC have gone through the roof over the last 2 years. My writing center colleagues at R1s and R2s are saying the exact opposite. I haven’t spent much time thinking about why, but I suppose when you charge what we charge for tuition, you want a human tutor

One thing I struggle with and am still trying to learn is that people often think leaders visibly thinking through things is waffling/weak, whereas speaking in sound bites and making quick snap decisions seems authentic.

I’m old enough to remember when they said this about MOOCs and then it turns out without a teacher and classmates to talk to, hardly anyone finishes their MOOC classes. Bc learning is social. We should absolutely kill the lecture and test model in most cases though. Small, active classes forever!
