Never mistake my historyposting for painting a utopia of the past. More like a more forthcoming kind of shitty. I can't even make a believable fantasy world without a surprising amount of shittiness in it.

What do I mean by more honest? "Hey, you're a peasant, that's a noble. He's fucking you over. That's your life." vs. "You are free! (to make us more money and if you ever falter for a second at it you will be discarded and forgotten)"

A medieval peasant in the modern era would not consider things "nice." Electric lights and cars would be delightful. The culture of lying at all times would cause a psychological breakdown into nihilism. I doubt they'd trade their honest communities for the ability to be lied to on the internet.
