Had to tell my interviewers that they were in the wrong room before my interview started. 🫣 Broke the ice anyway.

Last time I had an interview they asked how I'd like to be contacted if I got the job. Might ask for white smoke this time.

Toying this week with the idea the hidden complexity of modern life is a barrier to advocacy. Most people don’t understand (and haven’t needed to!) how much basic facets of their lives rely on complex and interwoven global systems

My favourite title of these PhD programs is Zapping Nuclear Waste. - fun to say - a lay person can understand it - has "zap" and "nuclear" in it - superhero generation? There are others too - come and check them out if you're a masters student. Fully funded!

Finished my week at an
#Aurora
event run by our University's Aurora Alumnae Network. So many people I spoke to said that they're grateful for the opportunity to do some reflection. Events like this give a boost in reminding us what we learnt at Aurora.

A striking difference between US and UK academia so far: At NYU, I said I think we should have Generative AI course for grad. students. This was approved in 2 weeks and required a couple emails. At Edinburgh, this would have required ~1 year lead time and at least two full committee meetings.

I spoke about my Aurora experience to the next cohort of Aurorans today. It was nerve-wracking being out of my comfort zone but went well. Feel a bit like dancing now - must be the adrenaline wearing off!

Walking onto campus yesterday I saw a student who had picked up the most perfect autumn leaf. Crisp and golden, he smoothed it with his hand and smiled. There's always something special about this season. 🍁

I have two big reasons to be a slow adopter of tech in general, and to be skeptical of generative A.I. in general. 1) my students were overwhelmed in the height of the pandemic, trying to juggle multiple new pieces of software. I go for the lowest tech option to ensure access.
