Next Astro On Tap Philly: January 15th, 6 PM at Fergie's Pub, 1214 Sansom Street. This time, Dr. Huei Sears will tell us about the oldest light in the Universe via similarly old 2010s pop music, while Prof. Federica Bianco will cover the robots that have overrun Astronomy. See you there!

I haven’t said this in a while, and it bears repeating: it is actually very easy to not work with abusers and rapists in the field! Moreover, we owe it to ourselves, our colleagues, and our future.

Even assuming an LLM stumbled into a revolutionary scientific discovery, it would only be an untested hypothesis. A lack of hypotheses is not science's problem - it's $$ for the research to test those hypotheses that's sorely needed. And, that's being cut to fund LLMs.

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service. “Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.

You’ll probably see this screenshot floating around a lot but it really was wonderful to see Lynch put a scene in Twin Peaks: The Return where he has his character literally stare at the camera and say that you should either support trans people or die. I needed to hear that in 2017

I don't think we talk enough about how even if you're staying on the same health insurance plan, each year it resets, and there is some time period where you cannot get prior approval because they cannot confirm that you will have coverage by a schedule-able date.
