For as much contempt as liberals have for evangelicals, the two have much in common. The evangelical says “who cares about the homeless? Heaven awaits.” The liberal says “take one for the team” to the needy every time. Either way, the world is a sinking ship and poor people are just extra weight.

The reason a lot of white people can operate in the privilege of a comment like “we used to be able to have dissenting opinions & now they break friendships” is because the people of color in the room had to be silent in order to remain in the room safely.
