Instead of "don't cut our funding," our message should be: hands off higher ed. You want to restrict what professors can say in the classroom? Hands off. You want to ban diversity offices? Hands off. You want to cut our research funding? Hands off. Hands. Off. Higher. Ed.

Some higher ed organizations who are loudly circling the wagons against federal funding cuts were oddly silent or circumspect about the earlier attacks on CRT and DEI. I wish there was a better understanding that these attacks are coming because we failed to repel those.

Universities will have an even harder time recruiting women and people of color (especially women of color) into administrative positions now… this whole thing is so tragic and racist. All those DEI promises made in 2020 were so empty and it’s still shocking to see how far the white backlash goes

Let’s be clear: multiple things can be true—one can believe President Gay’s remarks at the hearing were imperfect, that claims of plagiarism are worthy of investigation, and acknowledge that the campaign against her has all the markings of misogynoir and straight up racism. I wish her all the best.

If you are a college/university administrator, and you don't have a detailed, specific plan for dealing with online campaigns and targeted harassment, you are failing as a leader. And this means educating your Boards on how all this works, too. Lead, don't crumble. Because they'll come for you, too.
