Lots of folks came out to try One Last Fight, our roguelike storytelling card game. We had a blast teaching it to new players! (The game is currently sold out, but we've got a restock on the way! You can choose to be notified when it's back in stock)

I think one of the most important parts of game design is to make sure a player can still have fun while they are losing. It might not (and should not!) be the same as winning, but they should still have a good time. In a competitive game thats going to be 50%+ of your audience!

Been playing Titanium Court and gosh, what a fun little weird game. Chill, philosophical, and surprisingly difficult! (with some options over time to make the game easier) It also does a lot of clever little things with its static images and layering to create motion and expression.

I don't really understand it, but playing more ttrpgs has made all the ttrpgs part of my brain turn back online lately? Wild, I know. Anyway I have too many projects happening again please help.

Been trying to figure out something for awhile now. Why, in ttrpgs, is combat the thing so many mechanics are tied to? We boil every other check into a "roll above this number" and then we move on with the consequences, but combat's only consequence is that it keeps happening.

Been playing a couple different ttrpgs lately and its only reinforcing my belief that combat in most games isn't terribly interesting. Like, combat becomes less interesting to me the more removed it is from other mechanics. If resource management is important, then sure. But make it quick!

Trying to slowly get through some backlog of minis. Painted some Trench Crusade, but ultimately didn't vibe with it. Which is a shame because I liked the idea of an open sourced minis game.

Finished Demonschool this evening and what a fun puzzly-tactics RPG! It definitely felt at times that it was trying to speedrun being a SMT game, but in the moments that were its own the game really shined. Fun characters, incredible monster designs. Didn't need the 11 endings though. One's good.

Fantasy world-building tip: make something thats not a horse do the horse things. Need a carriage? Pull it with a giant rolly-polly. Till the fields with some kind of sword snake. Ride gallantly on your raptor-kangaroo monstrosity named "Charles" and bounce into the sunset.

I think I'm really cooking something special for codename Gobsports. Its super interesting to write a "combat" system where you technically don't win by defeating your enemies if they can still get the Orb in the goal. In the meantime, here's a picture of JORTS DAN, Underdog and crowd favorite.

The Illuminate Expansion has some of my favorite weirdos like the Fool and the Hungry House. If the base game is the expected party roles and villains, this one is for trope twists or being a weird little guy.

I don't know how to explain to the people who pop up when creatives complain about "AI" to say there are legit uses for it just how much they sound like someone saying "Well actually fire is used to make bread" when people are talking about an organized arson ring burning down their fucking houses

Starting to realize that I might not be able to hold ttrpg thoughts and wargaming thoughts in my head at the same time. Taking a break from warhammer and immediately ttrpg design things are filling up in the old noggin. Thinking of revisiting Dreamers of the Hoop because that never felt baked enough

Deep in the ttrpg philosophy today: Rules exist to guide and regulate player action. Each rule can inspire (letting players know this new action is available) and/or limit (telling a player what is not available). What then draws us to games with rules? Is it the inspiration or the limits?

Now that One Last Fight is getting into peoples' hands I am very excited to hear the kinds of stories they tell. I have yet to play two games with the same tone, genre, or setting. I've fought corpo Dracula, a cat who turned everything to meat, and a sentient meteor! What you got going?

In my continuing study into what makes a game "fun" I have discovered that the "fun"ness of a game is actually like, third in priorities. More important are "the people you play the game with" and "does the game align to the group dynamic."
