Some of the best sights and sounds of any film this year. No easy answers in what’s hopefully a major Oscar contender.

Bugonia takes a little while to truly feel like a Yorgos Lanthimos picture, but boy does it get there when it gets there. The 3rd act is both an outrageous spectacle and somewhat narratively muddled, but Plemons and Stone are at the top of their game, and their captivating work kept me engaged.

So it’s Godzilla Day? GODZILLA MINUS ONE isn’t just a great Godzilla movie, it’s one of the best movies of the decade. Flat out. Movies can really be that good.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but: ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER doesn't have all the answers. It's telling a story. Also: No movie has the answers. Not a one. They tell stories. Solving the problems of the world is not even remotely a movie's job. Hope this helps.

Blue Moon takes a little while to adjust to its hyper-verbal rhythms and minimal staging, but as a performance piece for Ethan Hawke it’s transcendent. The actor has scarcely been better, and he received exemplary support from Andrew Scott, Margaret Qualley and Bobby Cannavale. A bittersweet treat.

Frankenstein is by and large the timeless tale you know, with more than enough gruesome yet heartfelt flourishes to earn Guillermo del Toro’s signature. Oscar Isaac and especially Jacob Elordi bring new shades to the creator/creation dynamic. Some pacing issues, but it’s a wonderfully bold vision.

I feel like I’m not seeing this perspective enough, so I’ll just say that I am not remotely on board for the public rehabilitation of certain cancelled performers, who were cancelled with good reason and pose a potential danger to their colleagues. So I’m giving certain filmmakers a lot of side-eye.

Black Phone 2 takes some big swings in expanding its ghostly slasher premise, and while it could use less exposition, on the whole this is exactly the spooky time I was looking for. Hawke, Thames and McGraw continue to shine, and Derrickson elevates the material with a grainy, snow-swept atmosphere.

One Battle After Another is brimming with the ambition and confidence you’d expect from PTA. When it works it’s thrilling, but the overlong runtime and frequent tonal whiplash keep it short of his best. The cast is great with one major exception that I’m in the minority on, but IMO he drags it down.

The Long Walk is up there with some of the best Stephen King adaptations thanks to a beautiful spirit of hope in the face of unflinching brutality. Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson are deeply compelling leads, though the whole ensemble shines. An emotionally grueling walk, but very much worthwhile.

The Roses lives and dies on the strength of its central couple, so thank goodness this version gives us the sheer delight of pairing Olivia Colman with Benedict Cumberbatch. The two create a bitingly funny satire of a marriage that proves just as difficult to pull away from as it is to maintain.

The Toxic Avenger updates the classic Troma splatterfest while giving writer/director Macon Blair space to make it his own. The gags are frequent, the gore is shocking, the tone is irreverent yet sincere, and the cast are all fully committed. Not for everyone, and a little shaggy, but so much fun.

One of the many pleasant surprises of working my way through David Lynch’s filmography this year was discovering how much of a banger Wild at Heart is. Fans of Lynch, Cage, Dern, road movies, love stories, and esoteric references to The Wizard of Oz should definitely check it out.

That's such massive bullshit. The idea that mainstream hits just aren't being released on physical media is so incredibly short-sighted and stupid, especially as people are realizing all the flaws in streaming and starting to want physical copies of things again.

The Naked Gun faithfully recreates the nonstop barrage of gags that the heyday of spoofs were known for producing, with Liam Neeson & Pamela Anderson proving more than capable of playing it straight to hilarious effect. Excellent commitment to some profoundly silly jokes. The snowman is my favorite.

THIS. The only value any critic has is to be honest and insightful about how the movie made them feel, so that others may read about those feelings and decide whether that’s something they might want for themselves. Your opinion that a film is “overrated” is not useful or relevant to anyone, ever.

Can confirm, this is absolutely the way to go. I saw it with a nearly full house, and you could hear a pin drop during the quieter scenes. Everyone on the edge of their seats, squirming together, gasping together, laughing together. Incredible theatrical experience.

Weapons is a full-course meal of a movie, with a mesmerizing blend of big-screen thrills and intimate chills that had me hooked from the word go. Zach Cregger elevates every element that made Barbarian great and crafts a horror epic that’s brutal and brutally funny in equal measure. I’m still giddy.

This is an unfair comparison, because as I’m sure everybody knows, Garfield is an all-powerful eldritch horror older than time itself, and would therefore absolutely crush the Fantastic Four and any other superhero team you care to name.

My most anticipated movie of the year. So freaking stoked.
