Common theme of people I've interviewed recently. At universities, in research centers, in diplomacy, in the legal system, dealing with refugees or immigrants: The reality inside is much worse than you would think from the outside.

Shameless self-promotion and all of that, but it is genuinely unsettling to see how some of the most cartoonish ideas that I came across while writing the book have turned into actual policy.

One word got this grant killed for being “DEI.” This is the ONLY NIH funded study to look at how people with Trigeminal Neuralgia age because we take heavy duty drugs to manage the pain and the data hasn’t been collected and explored. TN affects more women than men. I despise what is happening.

I work in a dept without that many majors but my classes are always full. Humanities professors, in general, make pretty normal middle middle class salaries. So - prices aren't high, demand is high, the idea that there's a problem bc kids take those classes but major somewhere else is made up

There can be no republic if there’s no such thing as public good.

I will argue forever that secondary education teachers should have majors in their content areas, so maybe that’s what’s happening here? But why are so many of these programs education/teacher ed focused? Don’t we desperately need teachers? 🗃️🗺️🍎
