The academic system needs to take the work of building community-led, open source/access initiatives much more seriously as a valid and vital form of academic labour

One answer from the @openbookcollective.bsky.social is their Collective Development Fund: an optional 5% fee paid by the publishers & services in the collective. This creates a pot of money disbursed via grant payments to publishers & service providers for projects that build OA publishing capacity.

This is more than just adapting to an imperfect system. It is a bottom up set of initiatives that are not just working differently, but showing how a different scholarly system can be built, and that crucially this involves working with each other differently and collaboratively/interoperably

"U.S. federal government and cybersecurity researchers say a newly discovered security bug found in Microsoft’s SharePoint is under attack. [...] Microsoft has not yet provided patches for all affected SharePoint versions, leaving customers [...] unable to defend against the ongoing intrusions."

A major lawsuit has been filed by Dr Lucina Uddin (UCLA) against Elsevier, Springer Nature, Wiley, T&F, Sage & Wolters Kluwer. They're accused of running a cartel: exploiting free academic labour, locking in restrictive publishing terms & charging the public 3 times for access to research.

Yes and it's worth keeping in mind that so much of open access -- which is to say commercial APC-driven open access -- also involves the exploitation of the communities that make up the commons. Commercial actors across the board exploit both the common resources and the labour that produces them.
