We’re seeing the entire federal government push towards punishing Black people for being in public life, but we’re still supposed to be triple sure and super grave about the idea that anyone in particular could actually hold any prejudice.

Watching disabled people around the world mourn Alice is a reminder of the good aspect of the internet. 30 years ago, few people outside of SF would ever have known Alice existed. I never would have met her. The internet connected us all. Let’s honor Alice’s memory by using that power and community.

Ok, here’s the extended answer, & I’m blocking folks who feel the need to fight about mourning someone “incorrectly” in my replies. I’m deeply saddened by her death & do not have energy or desire to engage with these responses. This person asked in a less assholish way so here’s the answer:

I usually don’t like linking to the NYT, but I think it’s important to know that they wrote and published an obituary immediately for Alice Wong. (It selectively left out parts of her disability activism that they didn’t like, of course.)

There's also racial dynamics that's often ignored. It's white figureheads that are often the loudest about remote learning being bad, meanwhile Indigenous and Black kids lost caregivers from Covid at higher rates. And the horrors they faced are almost never mentioned in opinion pieces.

Please stop using language that suggests that people with criminal records are appropriate targets for this administration's violence. One in three adults has a criminal record. Stop playing sacrifice games with fascists. Stop surrendering entire categories of people in your own mind.

You know who would have published a good obit of Alice Wong? Teen Vogue. But they closed it, just a week before Alice died, screwing her out of her columnist gig a week before her death and making sure TV didn’t cover her death, Dick Cheney’s death or Mamdani’s win. Thanks, Anna Wintour!!!

Rest in power, Alice Wong. A fierce disability justice oracle, storyteller, and now ancestor. She taught us that disabled wisdom lights the future, and that our stories must never be erased. We mourn. We fight. We carry her work forward. Thank you, Alice. For everything you gave us.

This is one of the most recent things Alice did. It was, as ever, a clear, trenchant, messy, and powerful exploration of not just her own experiences but also society's expectations around disability.

We’re not doing “disability accommodations are unnecessary and unfair actually” discourse less than 24 hours after Alice Wong has passed. Absolutely the fuck not, even if it is a perfect example of the kind of shit disabled people have to deal with and why Alice’s activism was and is so necessary.

Alice Wong was one of the most effective people challenging the Whiteness of disability communities and its many flaws, but who believed fiercely in us as a community, in disabled people as oracles. Alice brought so much to so many of us, it’s hard to measure the kind of gratitude I have for that.
