worth comparing with ARPG, Action RPG. that acronym usually implies a more active combat system, but the rest of the RPG mechanics are there, and makes a good distinction from standard RPGs that doesn't tie it to any place or culture. what does JRPG say over RPG? nothing helpful to the actual genre

the term JRPG being used for ease of conveying genre tropes usually ends up being a rebuttal to that yoshi-p interview, where he mentions being uncomfortable with it. thing is, he has a point. it's a very different application here compared to other convenient categories.
