More seriously though, it's perhaps a good thing that more scientists are thinking about climate interventions. Ultimately, the more people get involved, the better our collective answer to whether or not we should intervene will be. However, we have to be rigorous in our assessments.

Is this a crisis or not? Are tipping point risks serious or not? Net zero is non-negotiable, but climate impacts are here, and all plausible emissions scenarios see us pass 1.5C. If now is not a reasonable time to explore radical ideas, when would be?

Why is this so important? It means that our emissions today will not just affect our generation, but countless generations to come. And the only way to permanently cool the planet back down once we stop emissions is to take that CO2 back out of the atmosphere.

While trying to escape from work deep in the Algarve, I was walking around a night market when I overheard an Englishman talking to a merchant selling artisanal soaps. "Chemtrails", he said, "they're spraying the skies with aluminium. It's geoengineering, they want to reflect the heat."
