The debate over solar geoengineering is starting to unravel—fast. As the U.S. dismantles scientific institutions and scrubs climate data, SRM is caught in a political firestorm. State lawmakers are rushing to criminalize it, while private companies move forward with zero oversight.

In 2024, DSG and the African Climate Foundation hosted a workshop series to build African perspectives on SRM. Participants from across the continent examined SRM’s potential role in climate response, governance challenges, & ethical considerations tied to climate justice.

Our work at @sgdeliberation.bsky.social centers on empowering civil society, supporting robust governance frameworks, and building science-based discussions that prioritize the well-being of communities and ecosystems. This doesnt change under the new admin - but it does strengthen the need for it.

We can’t continue to avoid this topic. We have to push for inclusive discussions that build towards good governance. If we don't constructively engage, an anti-climate federal administration risks leaving SRM to be developed by actors with little interest in justice.
