There are all sorts of wrong here. I want to point out one more. The US government makes promises. Recipients of funds expect promises to be honored. Without this surety, how do we plan, whether for USAID work, NIH grants, or ??? Reputation is a terrible thing to squander.

National Science Foundation fired nearly 170 workers this morning in Zoom call. This included workers who had completed a 1-yr requisite probation and shouldn't have been included in termination but were suddenly told recently that the 1-yr should have been 2-yrs, revoking their permanent status.

One of the stories I will tell: I have maintained these experimental lines of live animals continuously for 10 years. They help us to understand the impacts of climate change in the ocean. They cannot survive for 90 days without care. A pause doesn't mean losing 90 days. It means 10 years.

There's a super fun story about these spurless Columbines! Pollinators mainly visit flowers for nectar, but these nectarless populations were very stable, and this study found both molecular & biological basis for these supposedly disadvantageous forms. 🧪 Link:
