note on the "metroid prime 4 has chatty side characters" deal. i'm a sucker for silent storytelling, as you can probably tell if you've played the teslagrads, but i'm open for a lot of broader stuff in the prime games as long as it means the 2d metroids get to be more legacy oriented

The vibe I'm getting from the Metroid Prime 4 previews is that the game has a tutorial with lots of dialogue and involves more characters than Prime 1. Fair complaint, but also in line with where the Prime series was when we last left it so kinda what I was expecting.

gods help me, i'm kinda thinking about how to get the most of ocarina of time/n64 smash bros type "plane ramp" stairs with modern rendering techniques now

i'm doing so many small texture touchups that will go unnoticed by 99% of the public right now, but i'm way too stubborn for my own good, it's the curse of the current industry where you have to look as good as the hardware suppots on anything from 720p to 4K, it's very hard to generalize textures

been playing our game a lot these days and i think this is a prime example of the kind of bug report that doesn't get mentioned in media:

optimizing textures for switch is a little counterintuitive, because performance wise you're almost always better off keeping a higher resolution, but crunching the fuck out of it rather than keeping a decent image quality and going lower res

i love the disarming effectiveness of the "just a little guy" descriptor used by the second-to-current generation. "Einstein proved a lot about the underlying principles of the universe, but he didn't get everything right, he was just a little guy"

one funny thing about graphics is that we keep getting told that using non-powers of 4 compression is really bad practice, but there's really no better way to get the cleanest gradient ever made than using a 1x2 pixel texture with bilinear filtering, because it scales indefinitely.

the main thing about the epstein emails, like the sony leaks years ago(without further comparison, very different subjects going on here) is that they really do showcase that the rich and powerful are just common-or-garden idiots perfectly undeserving of their status, regardless of the sicko stuff

i sometimes feel like a fraud as an art director, but then i play a raw level i haven't touched up thematically or lit yet and everything seems so much more confusing and directionless even though the gameplay doesn't change

watched cyber ninja(1988), a stunningly visually inventive samuraipunk 1h12min straight-to-video flick by Keita Amemiya. Excellent production design for such a low budget film, and it has the distincion of being the first live action movie based on a video game (namco's mirai ninja)

it's really fun getting new tracks from jørn and linn (who have scored every one of our games so far) for knuckle jet, because while the're very versatile musicians (they mostly do film and theatre work) we've never had them do fully action based stuff before
