Oregon has been rebuilding the nation's first Scenic Highway into a bike path, after large parts were demolished to make way for the interstate. They've finally opened the crown jewel: the Mitchell Point tunnel. Absolutely stunning.

I'm heading up to Oregon for the holidays, and I decided to take the scenic routeβhead up the coast, enjoy the woods, and try the North State Express. The NSE is a series of synched buses that let you get from the Bay to Del Norte easily. It's a really good idea. How does it work in practice? π§΅

AC Transit's recent Realign service plan estimated hourly costs for a bus at $172/hour, where $343k would mean 2000 service hours. A single bus running once an hour each way from Caltrain to the park (a twenty minute trip, with layover time) comes out to 1250 service hours. Just run the bus!
