I'm heading up to Oregon for the holidays, and I decided to take the scenic routeβhead up the coast, enjoy the woods, and try the North State Express. The NSE is a series of synched buses that let you get from the Bay to Del Norte easily. It's a really good idea. How does it work in practice? π§΅

The year is 2192. The voters of San Francisco are voting on the Great Highway opening up to cars again. No one remembers where this tradition originated, but every year it attracts many tourists from all over the world.

Starting Dec 10, most Bay Area transit transfers will be free for two hours. If you take AC Transit to BART then transfer to Muni, your fare today is $9.10. With Clipper 2, the free AC and Muni transfers mean your fare will be just $3.90 1/

AC Transit's recent Realign service plan estimated hourly costs for a bus at $172/hour, where $343k would mean 2000 service hours. A single bus running once an hour each way from Caltrain to the park (a twenty minute trip, with layover time) comes out to 1250 service hours. Just run the bus!
