Climate change is literally canceling US independence Day celebrations. The July 4 parade in Philadelphia, the birthplace of American independence, has been canceled due to extreme heat. Heat waves aren’t new - what’s new is that climate change is making them hotter and more dangerous.

I had an appointment cancelled today because the other person was dealing with flooding after extreme rainfall. It's a reminder that climate change will increasingly disrupt our daily routines and our economies if we don’t reduce emissions now.

I've got to say that I'm really disappointed in the recent discourse surrounding the RCP8.5 scenario. The lack of context and understanding is something I expected from the usual suspects, but it's frustrating to see such bad takes from people and outlets who should know better.

Perhaps the fact that we are conducting an unprecedented experiment with the only home we have, by digging up and burning massive amounts of fossil fuels that is driving global change at rates 10X faster than the most recent warming of this magnitude that occurred oh about 55 million years ago? 🧐

I’m a bit confused by the sudden onset of summer. Feels like there was no spring to prepare for it. But temperatures in Germany right now are not that extreme or unusual at around 30C. Unlike other European countries like the UK and France, which are experiencing early record heatwaves.

Climate heating is making heatwaves hotter, longer and more frequent. Breaking records by 2C is unusual - as is this kind of heat this early in the year.

As our political and physical climates both heat up, extreme temps can get overhyped in social media (e.g., heat indexes conveyed as actual temps). This one is the real thing: 94.6F in London. Daily UK temp records go back ~200 yrs at some sites, so 2C above *any* prior UK May temp is big indeed.

Trumpism has truly hit Germany. The extreme right Afd party requested a parliamentary debate yesterday to discuss the implications of the removal of the highest emission scenario from the range of scenarios for the next IPCC report.

On climate scenarios: “In the last few years, a number of people have pointed out that assumptions underlying the highest SSPs don’t look as plausible as they used to seem (this is also true of the lowest projections, but people seem less bothered by that).” That’s probably all you need to know 😄.
