This has been such a weird time for artists. I needed space to get some of this off my chest 💙

Comic book writers are lovely, creative, collaborative people! With great vision! But I cannot stress enough these projects cannot exist without artistic skill and visual narrative practice bringing the story to life. And time. It takes time. It takes more hours of an artist's life to create a book.

I spent today working on book art about drag queens and LGBTQ trailblazers that we will never allow to be erased from history, and it did a lot more for my mental health than tuning into the news would have. I’ll stay up to date later, but today was about emotional preservation.

Big tech is trying to make us less thoughtful, less well-read, less creative, less engaged, less independent, less free, all while accelerating global warming and cooking us alive. Why are we letting them?

I did my first all-day school visit at Penn Charter today, bringing mini-zine and handkerchief design workshops to 1st and 4th graders, and my heart is so FULL! One kid told me she wants to be an artist when she grows up so she can spread more good things in the world. 🥲

What is common knowledge in your field but shocks outsiders? #kidlit illustrators work so hard to produce enough books to support themselves that they often experience repetitive strain injuries. Making a living from illustrating children’s books should honestly be an Olympic sport.

This book means so much to me - it was my way of dealing with my dad’s death and of also exploring my experiences of childhood OCD. It was also a way to celebrate all the things I loved growing up like Hocus Pocus, Buffy, Scream, Scooby Doo, Jurassic Park, Chronicles of Narnia, and Goosebumps! 💙📚

Whenever I get good career news or projects I always try to pay it forward to other creators. Who’s hosting a fun class in the neighborhood? Whose art print would look lovely in your office? Who’s exhibiting at an art fair and might be excited to see a friendly face? That kind of thing!
